Buying a 20ft Shipping Container? Don’t Ignore This Ventilation Upgrade
Improving Airflow in Shipping Containers with a Simple Ventilation Upgrade
If you are considering 20ft shipping containers for sale as a storage solution, one factor you cannot afford to ignore is ventilation. Moisture build-up and condensation inside a container can quietly damage tools, equipment, stock and personal belongings. The solution is simple — but only if it is done properly.
At our fabrication workshop, we have just taken delivery of another batch of roof vents, commonly known as whirly birds. These are specifically designed to improve shipping container ventilation by actively drawing hot, humid air out of the container.
Why Ventilation Matters
Shipping containers are steel boxes. While they are incredibly strong and secure, they are not naturally ventilated spaces. When temperatures fluctuate, condensation can form on the internal walls and ceiling. Over time, this trapped moisture can lead to:
Rust development
Damp odours
Mould growth
Damage to stored goods
If you are using a container for long-term storage, particularly for valuable items, airflow is essential.
How the Whirly Bird System Works
Our ventilation system is part of a professional shipping container modification process. We fabricate custom vents that are installed low in the container walls, allowing fresh air to enter. A reinforced frame is then cut into the roof to support the whirly bird unit.
As wind passes over the roof, the whirly bird rotates, creating a natural extraction effect. This pulls warm, humid air upward and out of the container, maintaining airflow and significantly reducing condensation.
For transport safety, the whirly bird itself is not attached until the container reaches its final destination. Installation is completed on site by the customer, ensuring it arrives in perfect condition.
